Swan maidens are shapeshifters from Norse myth who transformed from beautiful women into swans. They can shed their swan form by removing feather cloaks, but these could be stolen by passing wanderers. If that happened, swan maidens would be forced into marriage and a life of human drudgery until they were able to find their feather cloaks, transform back into swans, and return to the wild.
