I am often inspired by Chinese culture and traditions in my studio practice. However, as my work progresses, I realize that these sources of inspiration can be traumatic and emotional. For example, a recent enameled work depicts cormorant fishing, a historical fishing method by tying a string around a cormorant’s neck and forcing it to regurgitate caught fish. My work highlights an uncomfortable relationship between aggressive, illustrative narratives and the delicate, fragile nature of metalwork and enamel. In turn, this echoes my personal struggles with cultural identity and the disjointed feelings of being a stranger in both Chinese and American culture.
