The famous Chinese myth of Lady White Snake tells the tale of Bai Suzhen, an ancient snake spirit who falls in love with a scholar. She takes on a human appearance and eventually becomes his wife. Her identity is revealed when she is tricked into drinking realgar wine, which was traditionally used as a snake repellent. Her husband dies of shock upon learning of her true form. Despite this, Bai Suzhen fights Heaven’s armies to retrieve the herb of immorality and resurrect her love.
