Pomegranates, 2024
Copper, silver, enamel, steel
11 cm x 5 cm x 0.7 cm
I created an image of pomegranates with cloisonné and Japanese enamels while attending the workshop Cloisonné & Haiku with Harlan Butt at the Touchstone Center For Crafts. I am a fan of mythology and how pomegranates are frequently depicted for their beauty, symbolism, and importance in harvests. In Greek mythology, pomegranates often signified the contractual relationship between Hades and Persephone as well as varying beliefs on Persephone’s compliance to remain in the Underworld. I fabricated chain links out of thick silver wire which hang heavily against the wearer. The visual and kinetic contrast of the heavy chains with the delicate enamel mirrors the identities of Hades and Persephone, and the beliefs surrounding the myth.
